The conference marked a pivotal moment in advancing global collective efforts in ocean conservation and the sustainable use of marine resources.
Covering over 70% of our planet, the ocean is vital to all life on Earth. It is key to the global climate system, biodiversity, food security, human safety and well-being. Threatened by unprecedented environmental challenges and unsustainable practices, strong political will and urgent action is required to protect marine ecosystems, in line with international law, as reflected in UNCLOS, which provides the legal framework for the conservation and sustainable use of oceans and their resources.
The Green Group commends Costa Rica for its leadership in hosting the event and fostering global cooperation on topical issues, such as sustainable fishing, combating ghost fishing gear, promoting the blue economy, leveraging satellite technology for ocean conservation and addressing marine pollution from plastics.
The event was an important contribution to global commitments on climate and biodiversity and to the ongoing efforts to end plastic pollution. Its outcomes also represent a crucial milestone in the preparations of the upcoming UN Ocean Conference, to be held in Nice in June 2025, co-hosted by Costa Rica and France.
The Green Group remains committed to supporting global action towards ocean sustainability through advocacy, collaboration and innovation. We believe that immediate action, supported by strong political will and effective implementation, is essential for a sustainable future. We are proud to have contributed to the discussions and outcomes of this important event, reinforcing our shared responsibility to protect the oceans for present and future generations.
